ASTIS occasional publication, no. 10

For many years, readers have indicated their desire for a cumulative index covering all the years of Arctic's publication. Each year, however, the task of compiling such an index became more daunting as the number of papers published increased. Thanks to the Arctic Science and Technology Information System (ASTIS), the cumulative index 1948-1982 has now become a reality. As a result of producing the index with ASTIS, all Arctic citations are available for online retrieval from the ASTIS database. The index contains citations of all long and short papers. Obituaries, book reviews, and AINA reports are not included. The Subject and Geographic indexes use ASTIS' broad subject and geographic categories, as listed in the Table of Contents. If a paper deals with more than one subject or geographic area, it is cited more than once. For example, in the 24 subject categories there are 1356 entries; in the 27 geographic categories there are 1070 entries (citations total 952 papers). Under each category, citations are sorted by first author (with anonymous entries appearing first), and then by title. The Author Index is arranged so that citations appear under the names of all authors, resulting in multiple entries for many papers. There are 1027 authors listed and a total of 1438 entries in the Author Index. Anonymous citations appear at the beginning. Several individuals are primarily responsible for the compilation of this index. James Helmer and Ariana Sirko assigned the categories; Annemarie Marriner typed the data into the computer; Allice Legat proofread the printout; and Ross Goodwin, ASTIS project manager, was responsible for the production of the typeset final version. To all these individuals the Institute extends gratitude. In keeping with this publication of Arctic's history, it seems appropriate to recognize the individuals who have been central to the journal's life for the past 35 years. The Editors of Arctic, and their periods of service, include: Trevor Lloyd, Vol. 1 No. 1 - Vol. 2 No. 3; Diana Rowley, Vol. 3 No. 1 - Vol. 8 No. 4; Anna V. Moffat, Vol. 9 No. 1 - 2; Paul F. Bruggemann, Vol. 9 No. 3 - Vol. 17 No. 4; Anna P.B. Monson, Vol. 18 No. 1 - Vol. 27 No. 1; M. Vivian Hambly, Vol. 27 No. 2 - Vol. 31 No. 1; Leonard V. Hills and James B. Cragg, Vol. 31 No. 2 - Vol. 32 No. 2; Leonard V. Hills, Vol. 32 No. 3 - Vol. 35 No. 4.
